On a calm, July evening, I was standing on the shoreline of a small lake in northern Wisconsin.
Looking north, the evening shadows were covering the southern and western shore, while still illuminating the center of the lake and eastern shore.
The surface of the water was calm – glass-like in appearance.
At this location, there is a small private beach bordered by two piers. A swimming raft is anchored further out. I had taken a few pier images and a few with the swimming raft located just off-shore.
Just as I was about to leave the area, a young family appeared on a pier to my left, complete with an inflatable raft.
They were excited, as this was to be their maiden voyage in their new boat.
Lowering the boat gently into the lake from the pier, the concentric ripples were generated and dispersed silently across the still lake.
As I observed this energy transformation over the surface water, suddenly this image appeared.
Quickly, the tripod came into position, the camera was mounted and framing the image commenced.
This is my favorite image of all the images I took during the our visit to the north woods.
To create what I envisioned after seeing the boat first touch the water, I had to wait for the concentric ripples to fill the frame.
The challenge became working quickly before they started entering the boat, which would create larger waves, and dramatically change the wave pattern.
You will notice the slight section of the eastern shoreline and its reflection. This provides light into the image.
Without this shoreline, the image would be very dark.
With the illuminated shoreline, the viewer’s eye first goes to this area of the image, then explores the different ripples of the water. Gradually, one explores the full image.
